ServiceMaster Professionals Employs New Thermal Camera to Detect Home Problem Areas

ServiceMaster Professionals of Hemet are employing high-tech, noninvasive cameras to detect problem areas in a home. The latest weapon in the battle against inefficient energy use and mold is the Flir ThermaCam. Using a thermal camera able to “see” temperatures throughout a structure allows this company the ability to look into walls and under floors.

This thermal imaging unit provides a noninvasive means of monitoring and diagnosing the conditions of buildings. Like magic, the professional thermographer can view the temperatures of different components of a home, even through walls and floors.
“What you want to see is a very even color spread on the thermal readout,” said Ed Krick, Operations Manager of ServiceMaster Professionals. “Sharp color variances mean drastic temperature changes.”

Color variances can indicate pipe blockages, air and water leaks, poor ducting conditions and energy inefficient areas of a home or office building. The Flir ThermaCam can also see the hot and cold water plumbing running throughout a home. Even a small leak can be detected by the pooling of water, or abnormal flow of its temperature color spreading through insulation.

Mold spores are also detected using this new technique. As all living things generate heat, mold spores and colonies will show up on the camera as glowing red spots. “This is a great way for families to perform preventative maintenance on their home,” said Krick. ServiceMaster Professionals expects the market to boom for this type of service. “We expected that homebuyers will call to have their prospective home imaged and analyzed for potential problem areas.”

“A plumber walking into a leak repair might have to cut out multiple feet of drywall when searching for the actual leak. With this technology, we can pinpoint the problem, mark the area and save our customers money and the aggravation of having their property unnecessarily demolished.”

ServiceMaster Professionals is now using the Flir ThermaCam technology in its day-to-day services, including carpet cleaning, mold remediation and disaster recovery.
